Grief Awareness

Workers who Regularly come info contact with people Who are grieving Require a Unique set of skills and Knowledge.

This 90-minute workshop is designed for people who regularly work with clients or customers who are grieving. This may include those working in funeral or bereavement services, aged care and nursing homes, or palliative care services. The program teaches staff three key learnings, each of vital importance to those who work with grieving persons:

  1. Enhanced empathy for, and understanding of, the grieving process
  2. Better skills for engaging and communicating with bereaved persons,
  3. Improved capacity to self-care.
Key Workshop Components

This workshop addresses the following key components:

  • The 5 stages of grief defined by the Kubler Ross model and others
  • Factors which influence the grieving process
  • Understanding and preparing for challenging behaviours exhibited by grieving clients
  • Management strategies when faced with difficult clients
  • Communication Skills specific to those working with bereaved or emotional clients
  • Understanding compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma
  • Self-care strategies including the opportunity to practice a mindfulness meditation
Key Learning Outcomes

Participants will leave the workshop with improved knowledge about the grieving process and the many ways in which grief presents, skills in how to best engage and communicate with people who are grieving, with a focus on maintaining professional boundaries, as well as a set of strategies to protect themselves in their work, avoiding undue stress, compassion fatigue and burnout. Participants will also be introduced to a short mindfulness meditation.

Format

Typically designed as a 90-minute program presented at your premises, this workshop is best presented in small groups of up to 15 participants. An extended 2-hour version incorporates additional topics in the area of Mental Health Awareness. We are also able to extend or customise our programs to best suit the needs of your organisation.
